MUKIMA FARM
LOCATION 6km north of Nanyuki on the slopes of Mt. Kenya.
DESCRIPTION
Located just outside the town of Nanyuki at the foothills of Mt. Kenya on 360 acres of land with magnificent views of the mountain, rolling green lawns, swimming pool, salt lick and a dam, Mukima Farm is an old cedar wood farm house that was built during the early 1900’s and the land used to ranch beef cattle. It has recently been lovingly restored using local furniture and furbishing as well as several pieces from the Far East. It still however retains its old farm house atmosphere.
ACCOMMODATION
The house comprises of 6 en-suite bedrooms, three doubles & three twins, a lounge, study, games room, TV room, kitchen and a dining room that has French windows which open up onto the lawn overlooking the dam and the mountain beyond.
The swimming pool area has changing rooms, a bar & dining area as well as an outside fireplace.
Two more twin rooms will be available end of Oct ’06.
HOSTS
The house has a full staff team including a farm manager/host, chefs, room stewards and security guards.
ACTIVITIES
Within easy access is Mt. Kenya National Park for fishing or walking trips and just one to two hours drive away are Samburu & Meru game parks, Lewa Downs, game viewing on Solio Ranch and the Sweetwaters Sanctuary. Horse riding outings, or golfing at Mt. Kenya Safari Club can also be arranged and the area around Mukima Farm is excellent for bird watching. The salient area of the Aberdares National Park is only one hour drive away.
CONSERVATION
The farm land around the house is being used for a tree planting project. This project is designed to replace the magnificent Cedar wood forest that had been cut down to build the original farm house, and includes other indigenous hardwoods, trees with medicinal properties, some commercial wood stores and a few experimental trees, shrubs & aloes.
A tree nursery has been established so certain trees can be grown from seed.
WILDLIFE
In the past the farm had been severely overgrazed so an electric fence has been erected around the perimeter which has allowed the natural bush & bush creatures to return, including Guinea Fowl, Warthog, Bushbuck & Impala. The dam attracts a proliferation of birds and has been planted up with more trees that will attract further animals and birds to the safety of the farm. Elephant can be seen nearby in the Mt. Kenya forest reserve & Laikipia area.
SEASONS
The house is open all year round.
CLIMATE
The climate is mainly warm days with cool evenings. Rainfall is in April and November.
ACCESS
Daily scheduled air service by Safarilink to Nanyuki airstrip and a 10 minute drive to the house.
3.5 hrs drive from Nairobi.
